Rowenna 1, Mommy 0

When Rowenna was born, hubby and I expected a baby with a lot of hair – lots of dark hair. We’re both dark brunettes (hubby’s is nearly black) with tons and tons of hair.

Out came a baby nearly bald with a tiny sprout of blond hair sticking straight up, just like Alfalfa from The Little Rascals. For the longest time, that sprout was all Rowenna had in the way of hair and we adored the way it stuck straight up, a sassy little accessory. Eventually she grew a little more hair and we styled it as a pony on top of her head, affectionately named “the coconut tree” by a dear friend.

And while her hair grows slowly, it eventually did get too long for the coconut tree and I swore I would never give my child bangs. Her bangs would grow out until they were long enough to tuck behind her ear, and it would be smooth sailing from there.

Joke’s on me.

For all my dreams of little pony tails and clips and bows, Rowenna absolutely hated having her hair pulled back. These adorable styles?

See my adorable little pony tail?

See my adorable little pony tail?

They last 5-10 minutes, then the hair tie is out and she’s rearranged her hair so her bangs fall deliberately into her face, covering her eyes.

Hair grooming time looks like this.

Hair tie? Um, no.

Hair tie? Um, no.

And so, after about a year of try to out-will my toddler, a year of patiently pulling her hair back and pulling it back again, then again, we had it cut off and gave her bangs.

She is not impressed.

Very. Serious.

Very. Serious.

But it’s still Rowenna 1, Mommy 0 – no more hair ties or clips or bows. No hair tucked behind the ear. Bangs touching her forehead all the time, just the way my sweet girl has been telling me for the last year. I’m going to miss her little pony tails, but my sweet girl looks so cute and grown up, I’ll take this, too.
